Mark Woodward’s respect for the surfing sea otter grew along with a collection of pictures people have been swooning over around the world.

Sea Otter 841 wrested this board from a surfer and took a bite out of it. Wildlife officials had tried for months to capture 841, but she “outsmarted them every time,” according to Mark Woodward, who has documented the surfboard-stealing otter’s life.

Sea Otter 841 bites down on a surfboard off the coast of Santa Cruz, known for its world-class waves. Amateur photographer Mark Woodward said he photographed 841 on a board 10 times, and said she took a bite of the board on at least five occasions. 

Otter 841 gives chase to a couple of people paddling to Santa Cruz’s world-class surfing waves.

Otter 841 and her pup have company as they float off the coast of Santa Cruz. Sea otters need to conserve their energy, which is why it’s common to see them floating on their backs on the surface of the water.

World-famous Sea Otter

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Before his photos made Otter 841 world-famous for her harassment of surfers — or, rather, theirs of 841, because the people whose boards have had huge bites taken from them are not exactly innocent — Mark Woodward was just a semi-retired guy who liked poking around Santa Cruz with his camera and taking pretty pictures.

The 62-year-old amateur photographer snaps photos of lots of things besides sea otters. He is a citizen journalist whose photos of floods, mudslides and other disastrous spring weather events were a vital link to people cut off from the communication. He plans to do more of that as a community service. It’s one way he can help. A lifelong resident, he loves Santa Cruz.

Woodward was at Cowells Beach on June 18 to photograph Black Surf Club Santa Cruz’s Juneteenth paddle out when he saw the now infamous sea otter taking a ride. He moved his camera, focused it and snapped a series of pictures that would ignite a fierce debate about whose ocean it is, anyway?

Woodward figured it was “a fluke,” a funny one, but still a one-off. But 10 days later, 841 hopped on another board and took a little sail. Woodward posted his photos under his social media handle, Native Santa Cruz, and “that was the start of the madness,” he told Patch in a phone interview Thursday.

The madness included more requests for his photos from more places around the world than Woodward could have imagined and a collaboration with four University of California, Santa Barbara students doing a documentary on human and animal interaction in the coastal area. And the madness certainly includes what Woodward calls a bungled response to the otter’s aggression by wildlife officials, at least from a public relations standpoint.

“Two days later, the Monterey Bay Aquarium reached out,” Woodward said. “We talked for an hour, and I learned a lot about 841. She does have a history.”

What is illegal trawling?

Trawling is an industrial method of fishing that involves pulling a fishing net, that is heavily weighted to keep it on the seafloor, through the water behind one or more boats. The net used for trawling is called a trawl. Wikipedia

Deep into the sea off the coast of Talamone in Tuscany, lie a mermaid and a reclining figure carved in smooth Carrara marble. With other statues, they form a strange, dreamy underwater museum. They are silent guardians, protecting the sea against gangs trawling illegally at night.

With their nets ballasted with heavy chains dragging on the seafloor, the trawlers uproot the Posidonia meadows, a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean and vital to the marine ecosystem, which soaks up 15 times more carbon dioxide annually than an equivalent area of the Amazon rainforest. 

The practice is illegal within three nautical miles of the coast of Italy, but because it is very profitable and impossible to police the 8,000km of Italian coastline, bottom trawlers carry on at night regardless.

For years, Paolo Fanciulli, a local fisherman alarmed at the devastation caused by the trawlers, has tried various ways to stop them, including placing concrete bollards on the bottom of the sea with the help of Talamone municipality. But it wasn’t enough. 

He thought the blocks might have more impact if they were carved by well-known artists, explained Ippolito Turco, a friend of Fanciulli and president of the non-profit Casa dei Pesci, which they created together to protect the sea. A Carrara quarry offered 100 huge blocks of marble, artists donated their time and locals fundraised for the project.

“I thought it was a brilliant idea: it would attract more attention to the problem,” said British stone sculptor Emily Young, who contributed three colossal heads.

There are now 39 underwater sculptures and marble blocks at Talamone, lowered in 2015 and 2020, and another 12 are ready to join them as soon as necessary funds can be raised.

They create a defense against the trawlers and a unique underwater museum, to anyone. The statues also provide a structure on which organisms can grow, encouraging more plant life and sea creatures to return.

“The first head, the 18-tonne Weeping Guardian, which was lowered down five years ago, shows a good growth of plant life, including anemones. Fish are making good use of the newly available food and hiding places,” said Young.

Prior to polishing and painting your boat, make sure the surface is clean. Follow these steps to clean your aluminum boat:

1. Dry dock your aluminum boat

Pull your boat out of the water and prep a work area. This can be in a garage or a larger space that can get wet, such as a driveway or a dry-docking space at your local marina.

Elevate the boat off the ground in this workable space. If you need to use a sander or buffer, dry-dock your boat in an area where you have access to electricity.

2. Sand off loose paint and rust

If the boat has any rust, sand it off so you have a smooth surface. Depending on the sizes of the rusty patches, you might need a power sander and varying grit levels of sandpaper.

3. Wash the aluminum boat

Try to start this project when the weather forecast says there will be a few days of rain-free weather. Pick a work area that’s outside. It’s important that the work area is away from cars and buildings. Put a piece of plastic down to catch dripping paint. Elevate the boat so you have access to all areas of the hull.

2. Prepare the surface for paint

Before painting, remove rust, dirt, chipping paint, old wax and polish. Depending on the amount of rust present, you may need a power sander to create a smooth surface. Once you’ve removed rust, clean the boat by following the cleaning steps above.

3. Apply primer

Apply a self-etching, oil-based primer that sticks to aluminum surfaces. [6] Using a brush or a sprayer, apply a thin layer of primer inside the boat. Let it dry and then paint the outside. Let the primer dry overnight, or for at least 12 hours, before moving on to the painting process.

4. Apply aluminum boat paint

Choose a water-resistant marine paint that adheres to aluminum. Using a sprayer or brush, paint the inside of the boat first. Paint in horizontal strokes for an even coat. The inside coat should dry for around 12 hours before you paint the exterior. The outside coat needs to dry for the same amount of time. You may decide to add a second layer of paint to the boat for protection. If so, make sure the paint dries completely between applications.

5. Apply a clear coat

Once the painting is finished, apply a clear protective coat. This layer helps keep the paint intact and prevents scratches. Check the product label to determine how long this coat will need to cure before you put the boat in the water again.

A fresh layer of paint will help protect the exterior of your boat, but this is not the only way to protect it. Another component of caring for your boat is having boat insurance. Find out whether you need boat insurance before you put your boat in the water.

  3. Scrub the hull with a smooth brush that won’t damage the paint

  7. Let the boat dry completely
  8. Wax the boat
