Break-ins are an unfortunate reality for renters across Michigan, but renters insurance can be your safety net when the unexpected happens. Whether you live in a bustling city or a quiet suburb, protecting your belongings is crucial. Shield Insurance Agency is here to help Michigan renters understand how renters insurance can step in when you need it most.
What Happens After a Break-In?
Imagine coming home to find your apartment door ajar and your belongings missing. It’s a stressful situation, but renters insurance can ease the burden. With renters insurance, you can file a claim to recover the value of stolen items like electronics, jewelry, or furniture. Shield Insurance Agency works with Michigan renters to ensure their policies cover what matters most.
Liability Coverage for Damages
Break-ins don’t just result in stolen items—they can also leave behind property damage. If a thief breaks a window or damages your door, renters insurance can help cover repair costs. This is especially important for renters in Michigan, where cold weather can make a broken window even more urgent to fix.
Tips for Michigan Renters to Prevent Break-Ins
Install a security system or smart locks to deter thieves.
Keep valuables out of sight from windows and doors.
Always lock your doors and windows, even when you’re home.
While prevention is key, renters insurance ensures you’re protected if the worst happens. Shield Insurance Agency proudly serves Michigan renters, offering policies that provide peace of mind and financial security.

This past Thursday night, Hudsonville reminded us all why this community is so special. What began as a dreary, chilly mix of rain, snow, and wind felt like the kind of evening where no one would venture out. The parking lot was nearly empty, the drizzle was steady, and for a moment it seemed like the beloved Annual Tree Lighting & Nighttime Holiday Parade might end up quiet and understated.
But in true Hudsonville fashion, the night transformed—almost magically—before our eyes.
As the rain slowed, families began trickling in. One car, then another. A stroller here, a group of friends there. And before we knew it, what started as a slow, almost forgotten evening blossomed into a sparkling, joy-filled celebration. By the time the lights came on and the streets filled with laughter, no one was talking about the weather anymore… only the memories they were making.
Gemmen’s parking lot, once topped with umbrellas and slow drips of rain, quickly turned into a buzzing hub of holiday cheer. Shield Insurance Agency was proud to be part of this beloved community tradition as downtown Hudsonville shimmered with twinkling lights, warm smiles, and festive excitement.
The night offered something for everyone. A lively DJ set the tone with music that made even the chilliest toes want to dance. A mesmerizing fire dancer lit up the night with fiery spirals and glowing ribbons of light. Santa and Mrs. Claus spent the evening greeting children, listening intently to wish lists, and posing for photos families will treasure for years.
Guests enjoyed free hot cocoa, colorful face painting, and our always-loved Scratch Christmas Ornament craft station—where creativity flowed as fast as the winter breeze.
But perhaps the most heartwarming part of all? Watching the community come alive together. Grandparents holding tiny mittened hands. Parents capturing the perfect holiday moments. Teens laughing with friends. Little ones wide-eyed with excitement at every twinkle, every sound, every surprise. It’s in moments like these you truly feel what community means.
The local fire department gave kids the unforgettable chance to meet their real-life heroes. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clopped through downtown, adding a nostalgic, storybook charm. And the delicious food trucks kept everyone warm and happy:
Pronto Pups
Big Red’s BBQ
Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee
The Countdown We All Wait For
As 6:00 PM approached, families and neighbors filled the streets—bundled up, smiling, and buzzing with anticipation. The countdown began, echoing through the crisp night air: Ten… nine… eight… And when the tree burst into brilliant light, the crowd erupted with cheers. No matter how many years you attend, that moment never loses its magic.
Proud to Be Part of Hudsonville

There’s something so special about experiencing Halloween through the eyes of your grandkids. This year’s trick-or-treating was full of excitement, laughter, and just the right amount of chaos — the kind that makes your heart happy and brings back so many memories.
As the sun went down and the porch lights flickered on, we bundled up and headed out as a little crew — kids running ahead in colorful costumes, candy buckets swinging, and grandparents following behind with big smiles. Watching my parents out there trick-or-treating with my kids was such a full-circle moment. It instantly took me back to when I was the one holding their hands, running up those same sidewalks with a bag full of candy and a heart full of excitement.
This time, I got to see it all from a different point of view — seeing the joy on my kids’ faces, hearing their laughter, and noticing how my parents’ eyes lit up every time the kids shouted “Trick or treat!” It was one of those nights that fills you up in all the best ways.
Even our little Buzz Lightyear ship rolled right alongside the group, proving that Halloween magic is for everyone. The street was alive with neighbors waving, lights glowing, and that wonderful mix of fall air and happy noise that makes this season so special.
By the end of the night, the kids were tired, candy was everywhere, and our hearts were full. We safely left our furry babies’ home — cozy, calm, and probably wondering where all the humans had gone!
Take the Scare Out of Vet Bills
At Shield Insurance Agency, we partner with a plentiful network of trusted insurance carriers, many of which offer pet insurance options to help cover eligible veterinary expenses. Because keeping your furry friends safe shouldn’t be scary!
One of our partners, Nationwide®, even brewed up a list of spooky and unique pet names to celebrate the season — a fun read to share with friends and family.
Michigan’s winters can be harsh, with freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and icy conditions that pose challenges for RV owners. Whether you’re storing your RV for the season or planning to use it during the colder months, taking steps to winterize your vehicle is essential. At Shield Insurance Agency, we want to help Michigan RV owners understand how proper winter preparation and insurance coverage can protect their investment.
Why Winterizing Your RV Matters
Cold weather can cause significant damage to RVs if they aren’t properly prepared. Frozen pipes, cracked seals, and battery issues are common problems during Michigan’s winter months. Additionally, snow and ice can lead to roof damage or leaks if your RV is left exposed. Winterizing your RV not only prevents costly repairs but also ensures your insurance policy covers any unexpected issues.
Steps to Winterize Your RV
Preparing your RV for Michigan’s cold weather involves a few key steps:
Drain the Water System: Remove all water from your RV’s pipes, tanks, and water heater to prevent freezing and bursting.
Seal Openings: Inspect windows, doors, and vents for cracks or gaps, and apply weatherproof sealant to keep out moisture and cold air.
Protect the Battery: Disconnect and store your RV’s battery in a warm, dry place to prevent it from losing charge in freezing temperatures.
Cover Your RV: Use a durable, weather-resistant cover to protect your RV from snow, ice, and debris.
How Insurance Can Help During Winter
Even with proper winterization, accidents and damage can still happen. RV insurance can provide coverage for issues like roof damage from heavy snow, frozen pipes, or theft while your RV is in storage. It’s important to review your policy to ensure it includes protection for winter-related risks. If you’re unsure about your coverage, Shield Insurance Agency can help you find the right policy for your needs.
Get Covered with Shield Insurance Agency
At Shield Insurance Agency, we understand the challenges Michigan RV owners face during the winter months. Our team is here to help you find an insurance policy that protects your RV from cold weather risks. Visit us at Shield Insurance Agency or contact us today to learn more about your options.
What a night! The 2025 Patmos Library Trunk or Treat was one for the books — and Shield Insurance Agency was thrilled to be part of the fun once again!
Families filled the parking lot for an evening packed with candy, costumes, creativity, and community spirit. We loved seeing so many smiling faces stop by each trunk — every one of our awesome trunk hosts went above and beyond this year! From silly setups to spooky themes, you all made the event a total treat.
A huge thank you goes out to Officer Apolo and the Jamestown Fire Department for joining in the fun and keeping everyone safe. The fire trucks were a major hit — kids had the best time climbing inside, pretending to be firefighters, and even snapping photos from the driver’s seat!
And let’s talk about the food… because Patty Matters absolutely stole the show! Their gourmet burger lineup had something for everyone — and every bite was a flavor explosion. Here were just a few of the crowd favorites:
The Brewster – Beer cheese, bacon, and onion rings on a pretzel bun (an instant classic!)
BBQ Bacon Cheddar – Smoky, cheesy, and perfectly messy — the ultimate comfort burger.
Spicy Peanut Butter Burger – Jalapeño, bacon, cheddar, and peanut butter — the unexpected combo that worked!
Whether you went classic, adventurous, or somewhere in between, Patty Matters delivered the perfect bite to match the evening’s energy.
As the sun set over Hudsonville, kids ran from trunk to trunk, laughter filled the air, and our community came together in the best possible way. These are the moments that remind us why we love what we do — building connections, supporting local events, and celebrating the people who make our town so special.
We’re already counting down the days until next year’s Trunk or Treat! Thank you again to Patmos Library, all the volunteers, trunk hosts, and families who made the night a success. You make events like this so memorable — and we couldn’t do it without you.
Until next time, stay safe, stay kind, and keep making memories!
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year — costumes, candy, decorations, and family fun everywhere you turn! But with all the excitement, it’s easy to forget about safety and preparation. Whether you’re out trick-or-treating, hosting a party, or just passing out candy, a few simple steps can help keep everyone safe — including our furry family members!
Carving Pumpkins
Pick up sturdy pumpkins and safe carving tools made for both kids and adults.
Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of real flames.
Keep pumpkins on flat, well-lit surfaces to avoid tipping hazards.
Stocking Up on Treats
Buy individually wrapped candies to hand out safely.
Have a few allergy-friendly options for little ones with sensitivities.
Keep your candy bowl near the door — and grab a few extra bags, just in case!
Costumes & Decorations
Make sure costumes fit comfortably and aren’t too long to prevent tripping.
Choose flame-resistant materials and add reflective tape or glow accessories for visibility.
If decorating outside, secure cords and props to avoid accidents.
Taking a little time to prepare means more fun and fewer frights — the good kind only!
Watch the Treats: Candy — especially chocolate or sugar-free sweets with xylitol — can be dangerous for pets. Keep it out of reach!
Costume Comfort: If your pet loves dressing up, make sure their costume fits well and doesn’t restrict breathing or movement.
Pet-Safe Décor: Keep candles, cords, and small decorations out of reach from curious paws and tails.
Secure Spaces: With trick-or-treaters at the door, it’s easy for pets to slip outside unnoticed. A quiet, cozy room can help keep them calm.
Show Them Love: The sights and sounds of Halloween can be stressful for some pets — a little extra cuddle time can go a long way!
Be visible: Add reflective tape to costumes and carry glow sticks or flashlights.
Stick together: Kids should always walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
Use crosswalks and look both ways — some masks and costumes can block vision.
Check all candy before eating to make sure it’s sealed and safe.
Keep walkways clear and well-lit for trick-or-treaters.
Drive slowly through neighborhoods — little ghosts and goblins can be hard to see!
Celebrate Safely and Confidently
Halloween should be full of fun — not frights for the wrong reasons. A few extra precautions can keep your family, home, and pets safe so everyone can enjoy the night.
At Shield Insurance Agency in Hudsonville, Michigan, we love being part of a community that looks out for one another — and that includes our four-legged family members too! From all of us (and our furry friends) at Shield Insurance Agency, have a safe, fun, and paws-itively spook-tacular Halloween!
When it comes to getting ready for winter, most of us think of cozy blankets, hot chocolate, and maybe checking the furnace. But the truth is, a little extra preparation can make a big difference when the weather turns harsh or unpredictable.
You never know when a snowstorm, icy road, or power outage might catch you off guard — so here are a few smart (and often overlooked) ways to make sure you’re ready for anything winter throws your way.
1. Pack Some High-Calorie Emergency Food
If you’re ever stuck in your car during a snowstorm or lose power at home, your body burns more energy trying to stay warm. Having a stash of high-calorie, non-perishable snacks can help keep your energy up. Think peanut butter, granola bars, trail mix, jerky, or canned soups — simple, compact, and packed with fuel.
2. Don’t Forget a Portable Phone Charger
When the power’s out or your car battery is running low, a portable phone charger can be a real lifesaver. It keeps you connected, lets you call for help, and helps you check road or weather updates. Tip: keep it fully charged during the winter months and toss it in your glove box or bag before heading out in bad weather.
3. Bring Traction Helpers for Icy Roads
Getting stuck on a slick road happens more often than you’d think — but it’s much easier to handle if you’ve got the right tools. A small bag of sand, cat litter, or even traction mats can help your tires gain grip on ice or snow. Add a small shovel and blanket to your trunk, and you’ll be prepared for just about anything.
✅✅A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
Winter weather is unpredictable, but your safety doesn’t have to be. Taking a few minutes now to create a simple emergency kit can bring peace of mind later — whether you’re driving, traveling, or just riding out a storm at home.
Because while we can’t control the weather, we can make sure you’re ready when it surprises us.
📢📢Stay Protected All Season Long
While you’re preparing for winter on the road and at home, it’s also a great time to make sure your insurance coverage is ready too. From icy driveway slips to storm damage or roadside emergencies, the right home and auto protection can help keep life running smoothly — no matter what winter brings.
At Shield Insurance Agency, we’re here to help you stay safe, protected, and worry-free all winter long.

What an incredible time we had at Urban Hay Day this year! The event was overflowing with laughter, excitement, and all the cozy fall vibes that make this season so special. The streets came alive with smiling faces, cheerful music, and that unmistakable sense of community that makes our town feel like home.
One of the absolute highlights was seeing families and friends gather together — kids running from booth to booth, parents chatting over cider, and everyone soaking in the crisp autumn air. It was heartwarming to see our community come together to celebrate fall in such a fun and meaningful way.
Everywhere we looked, there were adorable and creative Halloween costumes — from tiny superheroes and sparkly princesses to animals, and even a few spooky ghosts! The kids brought so much energy and excitement, proudly showing off their costumes as they joined in the activities.
And speaking of activities — there was no shortage of fun! The pony rides were a huge hit, giving little ones their moment to ride in true country style. The train ride chugged through the event, giving families a scenic little tour of all the action. The hayride added that perfect rustic touch, and of course, the inflatable bounce houses kept the laughter going nonstop!
A big shoutout goes to our amazing fire department, who stole the show with their candy-filled pumpkin smashing! 🚒🎃 Watching the kids cheer and scramble for candy as the pumpkins burst open was definitely one of the day’s most memorable moments.
Beyond the activities, what really stood out was the sense of togetherness. Urban Hay Day wasn’t just an event — it was a reminder of how strong, fun-loving, and supportive our community is. Everyone came out to enjoy the day, connect with neighbors, and make memories that will last all season long.
We loved seeing everyone stop by our booth to say hi, color, and grab some cookies. The smiles, laughter, and little moments of joy made the whole day so special for us.
A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make Urban Hay Day such a success — the organizers, volunteers, vendors, and all of you who came out to celebrate! Events like this remind us why we love being part of this community.
Until next year, friends — stay cozy, enjoy the season, and keep that fall spirit alive. 🍁✨
When the weather starts to turn cold, a little preparation can make a big difference. Snow can be beautiful, but it can also bring a lot of extra work and potential problems if your home isn’t ready for it. Taking some time in the fall to get things in order can help keep you warm, safe, and stress-free all winter long.
Winter Prep Made Simple:
Check Your Heat
Before the first snow hits, make sure your heating system is working properly. Turn it on early in the season to test it out, and replace any filters if needed. If you use a furnace, have it serviced so it runs efficiently. For homes with fireplaces or wood stoves, clean the chimney and make sure everything is venting safely. Nothing’s worse than realizing your heat doesn’t work on the first freezing night.
Stop the Drafts
Cold air loves to sneak in around windows and doors. Walk around your house on a windy day and feel for drafts. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal gaps, and close curtains or blinds at night to help keep the heat in. These small fixes can make your home much cozier and even help lower your heating bill.
Protect Your Pipes
Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter headaches. Wrap any exposed pipes with insulation, especially in basements, crawl spaces, or garages. When it’s extremely cold, let a small trickle of water run from faucets to help prevent freezing. Don’t forget to disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off outside water lines before temperatures drop too low.
Clear and Inspect the Roof and Gutters
Before snow piles up, take a look at your roof. Replace any missing or damaged shingles and clear leaves and debris out of your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause ice dams, which lead to leaks and water damage inside. If you can safely do it, check that downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.
Get the Outside Ready
Put away or cover outdoor furniture, store garden hoses, and move any decorations or tools that could get buried in snow. Have snow shovels, salt, or sand on hand before the first storm hits. If you own a snowblower, test it and make sure it has fuel and runs properly.
Stock Up on Winter Essentials
Sometimes snowstorms can make it hard to get out for a few days, so it’s smart to be prepared. Keep extra water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, blankets, and any needed medications on hand. If you have pets, make sure you have food and supplies for them too. It’s also good to have a phone charger or power bank in case of outages.
Check Insulation and Ventilation
A well-insulated home keeps the warmth in and the cold out. Take a quick look in your attic and basement to see if the insulation looks thin or uneven. Proper ventilation in your attic also helps prevent moisture problems and ice buildup. Adding insulation or sealing air leaks now can make your home much more comfortable later.
Prep Your Driveway and Car
Winter doesn’t just affect your home — your car needs attention too. Check your tires, antifreeze, and windshield wipers. Keep an emergency kit in your car with a blanket, flashlight, and small shovel. For your driveway, line up snow removal services early or make sure your equipment is ready to go.
Think About Pets and Plants
Cold weather can be rough on pets and plants. Bring outdoor plants inside or cover them to protect from frost. Make sure pets have warm shelter, and if they go outside, use pet-safe ice melt so it doesn’t hurt their paws.
Stay Ahead of the Weather
Keep an eye on the forecast, especially when big snowstorms are expected. Having a plan ahead of time — like knowing where your snow gear and emergency items are — makes winter much easier to handle. A little prep now saves you a lot of trouble later.
In the End
Getting your home ready for snow doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple steps — checking your heat, sealing drafts, protecting pipes, and stocking up on supplies — can make winter a lot more comfortable. Once everything’s set, you can relax, watch the snow fall, and actually enjoy the season knowing your home is ready for it.
