End of Summer Road Trip? Be safe! Be Smart!

Shield Insurance Blog | Summer Road Trip | Start A Quote Today!

Whether you’re traveling alone, with a buddy, or with your spouse and a car full of kids, there are few things more “American” than the long-distance road trip. Countless vacation travelers will drive the highways looking for fun and making memories with every mile. If traveling down the “holiday road” is in your plans, take the time to prepare for your trip. You’ll have a more enjoyable vacation if you plan carefully. Here are a few driving tips, courtesy of Shield Insurance:

Summer Road Trip Safety

1) Maintain your car. Make sure your vehicle is up to date on its maintenance schedule, and be sure to check the battery and tires.

2) Plan your trip and know where you’re going. Call ahead for proper and safe directions to get you to your destination safely and have maps of the area on hand to help you navigate once you are off the main road. You’re more likely to make good decisions, even in dangerous situations, if you’re clearheaded and know where you’re going.

3) Be alert. Seems obvious, but driver inattention is surely the cause of a lot of accidents. If you stay focused behind the wheel and plan carefully, you will have a wonderful summer road trip.

4) Take precautions with a cell phone. Cell phones can be a lifesaver when you need immediate access to emergency services after an accident. Keep your phone within easy reach and get to know its features. However, use it prudently. Reports suggest that driving while talking on the phone increases accident rates.

5) Wear your seat belt. Whether or not it’s required by law in the state through which you’re driving, always wear your seat belt as a safety precaution.

6) Protect your car against theft. Help deter criminals from taking your car with steering wheel locks, switches that disable fuel or ignition systems, and electronic tracking devices.

7) If you’re in an accident. Taking immediate steps if you’ve been in an accident can protect your family and your car from further damage. Stop immediately and make sure your car is not blocking traffic. Turn off your car to keep it from overheating or catching fire. Warn oncoming cars using road flares or orange triangle reflectors. After you have protected yourself and your family, call your insurance company immediately.

8) Make sure your auto insurance is up to date. Before you even leave the driveway, you want to be sure you’re protected when you’re on the road and far from home. An independent insurance agent can provide the personal service and advice you need to travel in confidence.

Social Media

Did you know that Social Media could have a big impact on your insurance rates?

For Instance:

Selfies: Taken while driving and uploading them to social media could be a problem with your policy being non-renewed based on the fact that you are a distracted driver.

Text Messages: Texting and Driving Don’t Mix! Especially if you were involved in an accident around the time stamp of your convo, an Insurer may deny your claim or list you as at-fault.

Bad Habits on Social Media:

  1. Such as posting that you are divorced or married and not updating your insurance carrier of your status.
  2. Giving up smoking, and not informing your Life insurance carrier, then they find lots of pics of you smoking.
  3. Got a new dog in your home may be good but, if you don’t tell your insurance carrier certain breeds could cause a cancellation of your home policy.
  4. Geotagging while away on vacation can maybe cause an insurance company to deny your claim because you loaded your pics to social media with the geotags which can cause theft!

Just Remember: Always tell your Agent the truth and be honest. Don’t put yourself out there on social media where it could cause any problems with your integrity. Remember, the whole world can see you!!

Giving Back To The Community

With the holidays right around the corner, it seems like we get busier and busier every day. We have to plan for Thanksgiving with family, Christmas celebrations, presents, and celebrating the start of a new year. We all tend to get so busy that we don’t always stop to look around and notice that not everyone might be as lucky as we are.

There are many families that won’t be able to sit down to a nice meal at Thanksgiving or be able to provide even the most basic of necessities for their children. There are homeless people who won’t have a home to go to, children that won’t have gifts to open on Christmas, and families who won’t have enough food to celebrate Thanksgiving.

As we enter the Holiday Season we should stop and reflect on how much we have and how much we can give back. It can be a simple as donating a toy to Toys for Tots or donating the clothes you no longer wear to a men’s or women’s shelter. We can also go as far as starting food drives, toy drives, and clothing drives. Nothing is impossible when we choose to give to those who are less fortunate. Take it upon yourselves this year to give back and bring a smile to those in need. There are a lot of non-profit organizations that would be very happy to work with those who want to give back. You can also provide children in the hospital with toy donations. We should want to give back not only during the holiday season, but every day, but this time of year seems to make a difference for a lot of people who are in need. It is a beautiful thing when we can give back to those in our community. While there is a lot of people who volunteer with organizations they never seem to have enough to fulfill all the responsibilities. I encourage you this Holiday Season to give back to at least one person who is in need because we never know whose life we could be changing by doing a simple act of kindness.

Spring: A Time of Renewal

As winter fades away, Michigan awakens to the vibrant colors and fragrant blossoms of spring. The snow melts, revealing the lush greenery that blankets the state. The cherry blossoms in Traverse City and the tulip fields in Holland are a sight to behold, painting the landscape with a riot of colors. Spring is also the time when wildlife emerges from hibernation, and birdwatchers flock to the state to catch a glimpse of migratory birds making their way north.

Summer: Fun in the Sun

Michigan summers are synonymous with outdoor adventures and endless fun. With over 3,000 miles of coastline, the state offers an abundance of opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing. Summer is also the perfect time to explore Michigan’s numerous state parks and hiking trails, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

Fall: A Tapestry of Colors

When autumn arrives, Michigan transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of colors. The leaves on the trees change from vibrant greens to fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a stunning display that attracts visitors from near and far. The Upper Peninsula is particularly famous for its fall foliage, with the Porcupine Mountains and Tahquamenon Falls State Park offering some of the most picturesque views. Fall is also the season for apple picking, cider tasting, and enjoying the harvest festivals that dot the state.

Winter: A Winter Wonderland

Michigan winters are a true winter wonderland. As the temperatures drop, the state becomes a playground for winter sports enthusiasts. From skiing and snowboarding to ice fishing and snowshoeing, there is no shortage of activities to enjoy in the snow-covered landscape. How To Get Rust Off A Trailer Hitch

How To Get Rust Off A Trailer Hitch | Auto Insurance | Shield Agency

If you tow a camper, boat, or trailer you may notice your trailer hitch rusting. Prevent this with proper maintenance, regular use, and wax and/or painting. But if you have an existing hitch that’s rusted, there are several ways to remove the rust.

Removing Rust From Chrome Hitch

If you have a chrome ball or chrome hitch that’s showing signs of rust, simply ball up a piece of aluminum foil, dip it in white distilled vinegar or Coca-Cola and lightly rub the rusty spots. Rinse with warm water and dry with a soft clean rag. Follow up by polishing with two coats of any brand carnauba car wax.

Removing Rust from Iron Trailer Hitch

If you have an iron trailer hitch or hitch ball that’s beginning to rust you can remove the rust with Naval Jelly. First, remove any loose or flaking rust with a wire brush. Then apply Naval Jelly and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes—no longer than 15. Rinse and repeat if any rust remains. Dry the metal and paint with an oil-based paint within 24 hours to prevent the return of the rust.

All-Season Tires vs Snow Tires

Updated: Aug 6, 2018

Written by Shield Insurance Agency

All-Season tires vs Snow Tires?

The tread compound of All-season tires can harden in low temperatures, so there’s less traction between the road and your tires. But snow tires use special rubber compounds that stay pliable in the cold, giving them better grip and improved braking, even in extreme conditions.

Sometimes Michigan cold temperatures tend to drag on for longer periods. If it’s still below the 45–50-degree mark, leave the tires on. If the temperatures are well above freezing, the 50s, and above, then make sure to get those winter tires off and get your summer tires placed back on your vehicle. The longer you leave your winter tires on, the faster your treads are going to wear off your tires.

I love my snow tires! They help my vehicle a lot! But I will not take them off until the freezing temperatures are over. Since Memorial Day is almost here, I would say “get those winter/snow tires off of your vehicle”.

Home Safety Tips

Home Safety Tips

I follow the blog of a family friend who is a real estate agent and he recently had some great tips on keeping your home safe – safer than you think it might already be.  I thought this was too great of a list not to share.

A home is a place you should feel safe and secure. Sometimes, we take it for granted, and unfortunately, we do need to remain vigilant about things we do that could compromise our safety. Here are a few tips to consider:

Everyone loves an inviting home including burglars. Make sure it looks occupied and is difficult to break in. Always lock outside doors and windows even if you’re only gone for a brief time. Lock gates and fences. Leave lights on when you leave; consider timers to automatically control the lights. Keep your garage door closed even when you’re home; don’t tempt thieves with what you have in your garage. Suspend your mail and newspaper delivery when you’re out of town or get a neighbor to pick it up for you. Posting that you’re out of town or away from home on social networks is like advertising your home is unprotected. Equally dangerous could be allowing certain social network sites to track your location. Don’t leave keys under doormats, in flowerpots, or the plastic rocks; thieves know about those hiding places and even more than you can think. Trim the shrubs from around your home; don’t give criminals a place to hide. Use exterior motion detectors and yard lighting. Have an alarm system and use it when you leave home and go to bed. Put 3 ½” deck screws in door plates and door hinges. Have good deadbolts on all exterior doors. Exterior doors should be solid core.

Are There Other Drivers In the Household?

Updated: Aug 6, 2018 | Drivers In the Household | Auto Insurance | Start A Quote Today!

Written by Shield Insurance Agency on Sep 10, 2017 Share

One of the many questions we ask while preparing an auto quote is if there are other drivers in the household.  Here are some of the reasons why:

First off, under Michigan’s No-Fault rules, if someone ( let’s call him Marvin) is in an auto accident and needs medical attention, Marvin’s auto insurance will end up paying those medical bills.  It doesn’t matter if Marvin caused the accident or if he got hit.  It doesn’t even matter if Marvin was walking down the street and got struck by a car, Marvin’s auto insurance will get that bill.

Now if Marvin doesn’t have auto insurance, guess who would be next in line to get those bills?  If Marvin lives with someone, that person’s auto insurance would be next in line.

So that’s why the insurance companies want to know who lives with you.  If your roommates are driving without insurance, there’s a good chance a medical bill would land in your insurance company’s mailbox.

Happy Groundhog Day, 2018

Updated: Aug 6, 2018

Written by Shield Insurance Agency on Feb 2, 2018

Groundhog Day 2018

Punxsutawney Phil indeed communicated in “groundhog talk” that he had cast a shadow. According to legend, that means the weather will be wintry for the next 6 weeks.   OK! So if he wouldn’t cast a shadow, then we would have an early spring. Which either way you look at it, March 20th is the 1st day of Spring regardless. I will always remember when the first day of Spring is because it is my sweet Mother’s Birthday, a nice way to welcome the season.

Of course, visually seeing the 1st Robin of the season helps too! 🙂   In the meantime, we are getting a bunch of snow right now and still have to be extra cautious when we are driving. But, if you are a true Michigander, you do appreciate the beautiful, majestic, gorgeous Wintry splendor. The warm weather will be on us soon enough, but sit back and read your favorite book by your crackling fire or take a walk outside and marvel at the beautiful snowflakes casually drifting down on you and realize that the warmer weather is just around the corner.

Commercial General Liability Insurance: Are You Properly Covered?

Shield Insurance Blog | General Liability Insurance | Contact our office today! | Start A Quote

Commercial General Liability Insurance: Are you properly covered?  Should a contractor you perform work for be listed on your policy as an additional insured?

These are very common questions in the insurance world today.  Typically, your general liability policy covers you & your employees for liability in the work that you perform for your customers.  Adding an additional insured to your policy protects that additional insured from liability “arising out of work you perform”.

One example I can think of would be that of a cleaning company:   Company A (you) does the cleaning at Company B (additional insured).  One of Company A’s employees mops the floor with the wrong cleaner and leaves the floor extremely slippery.  A customer goes to Company B & slips/falls causing injury.  The customer files suit against Company B for liability.  Because this slippery floor is a result of the work of an employee of Company A and Company B is listed as an additional insured on Company A’s insurance policy, Company B has additional liability coverage under Company A’s policy because the incident occurred “arising out of” work Company A performed.
