What is Michigan State Short-Term Disability Insurance?

Short-term disability insurance is designed to provide income replacement for individuals who are unable to work due to a temporary disability. This type of insurance coverage typically lasts for a specific period, usually up to six months, and provides a percentage of the individual’s pre-disability income.

What Does Short-Term Disability Insurance Cover in Michigan?

Short-term disability insurance in Michigan covers a wide range of health conditions that prevent individuals from working. These conditions can include illnesses, injuries, surgeries, and mental health disorders. However, it is important to note that not all health conditions are covered under short-term disability insurance. Certain pre-existing conditions may be excluded from coverage.

How Does Short-Term Disability Insurance Work in Michigan?

In Michigan, short-term disability insurance is typically provided through an employer-sponsored group plan or purchased individually. When an individual becomes disabled and is unable to work, they must file a claim with their insurance provider. The insurance provider will review the claim and determine if the individual meets the criteria for disability benefits. If approved, the individual will receive a percentage of their pre-disability income for the duration of their disability.

What Health Conditions are Included and Categorically Excluded?

Short-term disability insurance in Michigan covers a wide range of health conditions, including but not limited to:

– Illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes

– Injuries such as broken bones, sprains, and concussions

– Surgeries such as joint replacements, hernia repairs, and appendectomies

– Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder

However, certain health conditions may be categorically excluded from coverage. These can include pre-existing conditions, self-inflicted injuries, and disabilities caused by illegal activities.

What are the Significant Terms to Remember?

When it comes to short-term disability insurance in Michigan, there are several significant terms to remember. These include:

– Elimination period: This is the waiting period before disability benefits begin. It is typically a specified number of days after the disability occurs.

– Benefit period: This is the length of time that disability benefits will be paid. It is usually up to six months but can vary depending on the policy.

– Benefit amount: This is the percentage of the individual’s pre-disability income that will be paid as disability benefits. It is typically around 60-70% of the individual’s income.

More About Short-Term Disability Insurance

Short-term disability insurance provides individuals with financial protection during a temporary disability. It can help cover expenses such as medical bills, mortgage or rent payments, and daily living expenses. It is important to carefully review the terms and conditions of a short-term disability insurance policy to ensure that it meets your specific needs.

Can I Get Temporary Disability After Surgery?

Yes, short-term disability insurance can provide coverage for individuals who are unable to work due to surgery. Whether it is a minor procedure or a major surgery, short-term disability insurance can help replace a portion of the individual’s income during their recovery period.

What are the Common Procedures that Lead to Short-Term Disability?

Several common procedures can lead to short-term disability, including:

– Joint replacements: Procedures such as hip or knee replacements can require a significant recovery period and may result in temporary disability.

– Hernia repairs: Hernia repairs can be a major surgery that requires time off work for recovery.

– Appendectomies: An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix and can result in a temporary disability.

What are the Options After Wrongful Disability Denials?

If an individual’s short-term disability claim is wrongfully denied, there are options available to appeal the decision. It is important to gather all relevant medical documentation and evidence to support the claim. Seeking legal advice from an experienced attorney specializing in disability insurance can also be beneficial in navigating the appeals process.

What are the Common Red Flags that Indicate Bad-Faith Delays or Wrongful Denials of Disability Coverage?

Several common red flags may indicate bad faith delays or wrongful denials of disability coverage. These can include:

– Unreasonable delays in processing the claim

– Inconsistent or contradictory reasons for denial

– Failure to provide a clear explanation for the denial

– Ignoring or misrepresenting medical evidence

– Failing to consider all relevant information

If any of these red flags are present, it may be necessary to seek legal assistance to ensure that the individual’s rights are protected.

Medicaid in Michigan: What You Need to Know

Shield Insurance Blog | Medicaid in Michigan | Contact Brianna or Carlos for details! | Shield Quoting Portal

When it comes to health care, Medicaid in Michigan is one of the most important and beneficial programs available to residents. Understandably, many people have questions about Medicaid in Michigan, particularly when it comes to eligibility, services covered, and the unique circumstances surrounding the program. In this blog post, we’ll dive into what Medicaid is, who can qualify, what it covers, how it works, and more. We’ll also examine how Medicaid in Michigan responds to economic downturns and emergencies, and how residents feel about the program. Finally, we’ll explore how Shield Insurance Agency can help you find a plan that fits your budget and needs.

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a joint state and federal government program that serves as a social safety net for some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations. Medicaid provides a range of services from preventative care, to doctor’s visits and hospital stays, to long-term in-home and nursing home care. These services and the program’s specifics may vary across states.

Who Qualifies for Medicaid in Michigan?

The Medicaid program is broad in its range of eligible applicants. It is open to both children and adults with low- to moderate levels of income. In Michigan, the qualifications for … Medicaid income differ depending on family size, though applicants must also meet other factors such as age, residency, and assets.

What Does Medicaid Cover?

Medicaid in Michigan covers a range of services to its beneficiaries from hospital visits and physician services to long-term nursing home care and home health care. It also provides certain preventive care services, such as annual checkups, immunizations, vision, and dental care. Other services such as mental and behavioral health treatment and substance abuse treatment may also be covered.

How Does Medicaid in Michigan Work?

In Michigan, Medicaid works through a partnership between the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and several other organizations. MDHHS runs the program and sets guidelines, while individual counties are responsible for determining eligibility for Medicaid benefits and providing services. If an individual meets the requirements, they may receive services from local county agencies or from managed care organizations (MCOs), which are organizations that contract with the state to provide Medicaid-covered services.

What are Demonstration Waivers?

Demonstration waivers are federal waivers that can be applied for by states, allowing them to adopt Medicaid programs tailored to meet the needs of their constituents. States can design their own Medicaid programs based on the demonstration waiver, and these programs may include different eligibility criteria, benefits, and service delivery methods than those available under the traditional Medicaid program. Demonstration waivers must be approved by the federal government before they can go into effect.

How Does Medicaid Respond To Economic Downturns and Other Emergencies?

During challenging economic times, the Medicaid program can serve as an important piece of safety net to assist vulnerable populations. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of Michigan created an emergency assistance program to help people who were laid off, lost wages, or are otherwise financially disadvantaged due to the pandemic. This program allows qualifying applicants to receive enhanced Medicaid benefits.

How Does the Public Feel About Medicaid in Michigan?

In general, the public has a positive opinion of the Medicaid program as it helps those who need it the most. For individuals who are eligible, Medicaid can provide financial security and access to needed medical care that may not otherwise be available. Though some criticism does exist, Medicaid is a widely popular program and receives a considerable amount of public support.

Stuck In Window For 5 Hours Delivery Man Saves Elderly Woman

FOX 13 Tampa Bay | June 29, 2023 | Stuck In Window | Home Insurance | Start A Quote!

A newspaper delivery man has become a local hero after he rescued a 78-year-old woman who had been stuck in a window for five agonizing hours.

The story unfolded when the woman, identified as Nancy Reyburn, found herself trapped in a precarious situation as she attempted to break into her own home through a window after she had locked herself out. In her desperate efforts to get inside, she became stuck.

“Because of surgery, I had with two hip replacements, I can’t get past mid-part of my leg,” Reyburn told Fox 13. “I’m reaching around the more moving I did, the worse I felt.”

Stuck In Window For 5 Hours

She was stuck in the window for five hours. No one could hear her and hope was running out.

“I was asking God, ‘please this is not the way I want to be found’,” Reyburn recalled.

And just when it seemed that all hope was lost, out of the corner of her eye, she saw the blinking orange light on top of Jose Sanchez’s car.

Sanchez said he was on his normal paper route early Tuesday morning when he heard screaming and saw Reyburn stuck in the window.

“How I screamed, I have no idea,” she said.

Sanchez stuck by her and called 911, and help was finally on the way. Some are calling him the neighborhood guardian angel.

“I’m touched, because I care for these people in this park, they’re like my family, and they’re retired, and I try to watch out for them,” Sanchez said.

“Yes, I do believe in angels and people are put in a place for that time and that night, morning was my time to be helped by Jose,” Reyburn added.

Kayakers Swallowed By Whale Live To Tell The Tale

Shield Insurance Blog | June 8, 2023 | Swallowed By Whale | Life Insurance | Start A Quote Today

VIDEO: Humpback whale almost swallows kayakers near a California beach

The two managed to escape unscathed, briefly going underwater after capsizing before reemerging.

Julie McSorley says she learned an important lesson after she and her friend ended up in a humpback’s mouth: “Whales need their space.”

McSorley and Liz Cottriel were kayaking together in California’s San Luis Obispo Bay watching the whales feed on silverfish when one of the massive sea creatures surfaced beneath them, toppling their kayak and knocking them into the water.

Videos and photos from other kayakers and paddlers appear to show the women and their kayak being momentarily engulfed in the whale’s mouth — though the two friends say it all happened too fast for them to be sure.

“It’s definitely woke me up to the realization that, you know, our place is not in the feeding zone of whales,” McSorley told As It Happens host Carol Off.

“We didn’t think we were that close, but we definitely were right in the area that we shouldn’t have been — so I’ve learned my lesson, big time.”

Swallowed By Whale

AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Two whale watchers had a close encounter while kayaking off the coast of Avila Beach, California, that they will likely never forget.

Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel were watching humpback whales on Monday when one decided to get up close and personal. A whale came up underneath them and caused them to capsize.

“I saw the big pool of fish, the big bait ball come up out of the water,” McSorley told CNN affiliate KMPH. “I saw the whale come up. I thought, ‘Oh, no! It’s too close.'”

“All of a sudden, I lifted up, and I was in the water.”

Footage from a witness nearby makes it appear as if the kayakers are being swallowed by the whale, but the two just tipped over.

“The whale was right here in my face, literally,” Cottriel told KMPH.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘I’m gonna push. Like, I’m gonna push a whale out of the way! It was the weirdest thought. I’m thinking, ‘I’m dead. I’m dead.’ I thought it was gonna land on me. Next thing I know, I’m underwater.”

The two managed to escape unscathed, briefly going underwater after capsizing before reemerging.

Humpback whales typically feed on krill and small fish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The NOAA says humpback whales are popular among whale watchers as they are active on the surface and often jump out and slap the water with their pectoral fins or tails.

Health Insurance: The Importance of Protection for You and Your Family

Shield Insurance Agency Blog | Health Insurance | Contact Bri or Carlos for details

Medical expenses can be a significant financial burden, especially if you or a family member
requires extensive medical treatment. Health insurance is a crucial tool that can help you
manage these costs and ensure that you and your loved ones receive the care you need. In this
blog post, we will explore the different types of health insurance available, the benefits of having
health insurance, and how to find affordable coverage.

Types of Health Insurance

There are two main types of health insurance: private health insurance and public health
insurance. Private health insurance is typically purchased by individuals or provided by
employers as part of a benefits package. Public health insurance is provided by the government
and includes programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Supplemental health insurance is another type of coverage that can be added to your existing
health insurance plan. This type of insurance can help cover costs that are not included in your
primary health insurance plan, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
Benefits of Having Health Insurance

The primary benefit of having health insurance is protection. Health insurance can help cover
the costs of medical treatment, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription
medications. Without health insurance, these expenses can quickly add up and become
Unmanageable.

In addition to financial protection, health insurance can also provide peace of mind. Knowing
that you and your family are covered in the event of a medical emergency can alleviate stress
and anxiety.

Finding Affordable Health Insurance

One of the biggest concerns for many people when it comes to health insurance is affordability.
Fortunately, there are several ways to find affordable coverage.

One option is to shop around for health insurance quotes. Shield Insurance Agency represents
over 40 insurance companies and can help you find a plan that fits your needs and budget.

Contact Shield Insurance Agency at (616) 896-4600 for a free quote today.

Another option is to consider a high-deductible health plan. These plans typically have lower
monthly premiums but require you to pay a higher deductible before your insurance coverage
kicks in. While this can be a riskier option, it can also be a good choice for those who are
generally healthy and do not anticipate needing extensive medical treatment.

Finally, you may be eligible for public health insurance programs like Medicaid or Medicare.
These programs are designed to provide coverage for low-income individuals and seniors,
respectively.

Choosing the Right Health Insurance Plan

When choosing a health insurance plan, it is important to consider your specific needs and
budget. Some factors to consider include:

  • Monthly premiums: How much can you afford to pay each month for health insurance?
  • Deductibles: How much will you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in?
  • Copayments and coinsurance: How much will you be responsible for paying for doctor visits,
    prescriptions, and other medical expenses?
  • Network: Does the plan include the doctors and hospitals you prefer to use?
  • Coverage: Does the plan cover the medical treatments and services you need?

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a health insurance plan that provides the
protection you need at a price you can afford.

In conclusion, health insurance is a crucial tool for protecting yourself and your family from the
financial burden of medical expenses. Whether you choose private health insurance, public
health insurance, or supplemental health insurance, it is important to find a plan that fits your
needs and budget. By working with Shield Insurance Agency and carefully considering your
options, you can find affordable health insurance coverage that provides the protection you
need.

Disability Insurance: Protecting Your Income and Future

Shield Insurance Agency Blog | Disability Insurance | Start a Quote Today!

Disability insurance is a type of insurance that provides financial protection to individuals who are unable to work due to an injury or illness. It is designed to replace a portion of your income if you become disabled and are unable to work for an extended period of time. Disability insurance coverage can be purchased as a short-term or long-term policy, depending on your needs.

Term Disability Insurance

Short-term disability insurance provides coverage for a limited period of time, typically up to six months. This type of policy is designed to provide financial support during the initial stages of a disability, such as recovery from surgery or an illness. Short-term disability insurance can help cover expenses such as medical bills, mortgage payments, and other living expenses.

Long-term disability insurance provides coverage for a longer period of time, typically up to several years or until retirement age. This type of policy is designed to provide financial support for individuals who are unable to work for an extended period of time due to a disability. Long-term disability insurance can help cover expenses such as medical bills, mortgage payments, and other living expenses.

Disability Insurance Coverage

Disability insurance coverage can vary depending on the policy and the insurance company. Some policies may cover only specific types of disabilities, while others may cover any disability that prevents you from working. It is important to carefully review the policy and understand the coverage before purchasing disability insurance.

Some disability insurance policies may also offer additional benefits, such as rehabilitation services, vocational training, and survivor benefits. These benefits can help individuals recover from a disability and return to work, or provide financial support to their loved ones in the event of their death.

Transparency in Health Care

In October 2020, the federal government issued the “transparency in coverage” final rule under the Federal No Surprises Act. The rule provides protection against balance or “surprise” billing under certain circumstances, and phases in new transparency requirements on most group health plans and health insurers. The purpose of the requirements is to enable consumers to make informed healthcare purchasing decisions.

What is “balance billing” (sometimes called “billing surprises”)?

When you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a healthcare facility that isn’t in your health plan’s network.

Nonparticipating describes providers and facilities that haven’t signed a contract with your health plan. Nonparticipating providers may be permitted to bill you for the difference between what your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service. This is called balance billing. This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and might not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit.

Surprise billing is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can’t control who is involved in your care, such as when you have an emergency or schedule a visit at a participating facility but are unexpectedly treated by a nonparticipating provider.

Your rights and protections against Surprises

When you get emergency care or get treated by a nonparticipating provider at a participating hospital or ambulatory surgical center, you are protected from balance or surprise billing.
Services you are protected from balance billing for:

Emergency services

If you have an emergency medical condition and get emergency services from a nonparticipating provider or facility, the most the provider or facility may bill you is your plan’s in-network out-of-pocket amount, such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. You can’t be balance billed for these emergency services. This includes services you may get after you’re in stable condition unless you give written consent and give up your protections not to be balanced billed for these post-stabilization services.

Michigan law also protects you from balance billing and requires that you pay only your in-network cost-sharing amounts for (i) covered emergency services provided by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility or out-of-network facility; (ii) covered nonemergency services provided by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility if you do not have the ability or opportunity to choose an in-network provider; and (iii) any healthcare services you receive at an in-network facility from an out-of-network provider within 72 hours of receiving services from that facility’s emergency room.

Certain services at a participating hospital or ambulatory surgical center

Medical Insurance Can Provide Financial Protection.

Medical Insurance Can Provide Financial Protection.

Shield Agency Blog | Medical Insurance | Contact Brianna for a quote!

Medical Insurance is a crucial aspect of our lives that we often overlook until we need it. It provides us with financial protection against unexpected medical expenses, which can be quite expensive. Health insurance covers a wide range of medical services, including doctor visits, hospitalization, surgeries, and prescription drugs. In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of health insurance and why it is essential to have.

One of the most significant benefits of medical health insurance is that it helps you manage your medical expenses. With health insurance, you pay a monthly premium, and in return, your insurance company covers a portion of your medical expenses. This means that you don’t have to worry about paying the full cost of medical services out of your pocket. However, it is important to note that most health insurance plans have a deductible, which is the amount you have to pay before your insurance coverage kicks in. Once you reach your deductible, your insurance company will cover a portion of your medical expenses.

Another benefit of medical insurance is that it covers prescription drugs. Prescription drugs can be quite expensive, especially if you need to take them regularly. With health insurance, you can get your prescription drugs at a lower cost, which can save you a lot of money in the long run. Some health insurance plans also cover preventive care, such as annual check-ups and screenings, which can help you detect health problems early on.

Health insurance also promotes well-being, both physical and emotional. With health insurance, you have access to medical services that can help you maintain your physical fitness and overall health. This includes regular check-ups, screenings, and access to specialists if needed. Additionally, some health insurance plans offer wellness programs that focus on nutrition and wellness, which can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Emotional Health is part of Medical Insurance

Emotional health is also an important aspect of well-being, and health insurance can help you manage your mental health. Mental health services, such as therapy and counseling, can be quite expensive without insurance. With health insurance, you can get the help you need without worrying about the cost. This can be especially important for those who struggle with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.

Health insurance also benefits families. With a family health insurance plan, you can cover your entire family under one policy. This means that you don’t have to worry about getting individual policies for each family member. Additionally, family health insurance plans often offer lower premiums than individual plans, which can save you money in the long run.

In conclusion, health insurance is essential for managing medical expenses and promoting well-being. It covers a wide range of medical services, including doctor visits, hospitalization, surgeries, and prescription drugs. Health insurance also promotes physical and emotional health, as well as nutrition and wellness. Additionally, it benefits families by providing coverage for the entire family under one policy. Health insurance is a crucial aspect of our lives that we often overlook until we need it. It provides us with financial protection against unexpected medical expenses that can arise from sickness, injury, or any other medical condition. In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of health insurance and why it is essential to have it.

Health Insurance Bills

One of the most significant benefits of health insurance is that it helps you manage your medical bills. Medical bills can be expensive, and without insurance, you may find yourself struggling to pay them. Health insurance covers a portion of your medical expenses, which can help you save a significant amount of money. The amount of coverage you receive depends on your policy, but it can cover anything from doctor visits to hospital stays.

Another benefit of health insurance is that it helps you manage your deductibles. A deductible is the amount of money you pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in. With health insurance, you can choose a deductible that fits your budget and needs. This means that you can choose a higher deductible to lower your monthly premiums or a lower deductible to pay less out of pocket when you need medical care.

Prescriptions are another area where health insurance can be beneficial. Prescription drugs can be expensive, and without insurance, you may find yourself struggling to afford them. Health insurance can help cover the cost of prescription drugs, which can make it easier for you to manage your medical condition.

Injury and sickness are two of the most common reasons people need medical care. Health insurance can help cover the cost of medical care for both injuries and sickness. This means that you can get the medical care you need without worrying about the cost.

Medical emergencies can happen at any time, and they can be expensive. Health insurance can help cover the cost of emergency medical care, which can be a lifesaver in a medical emergency. This means that you can get the medical care you need without worrying about the cost.

Finally, health insurance can be beneficial for your family. If you have a family, you want to make sure that they are protected in case of a medical emergency. Health insurance can help cover the cost of medical care for your family, which can give you peace of mind.

In conclusion, health insurance is essential for anyone who wants to protect themselves and their family from unexpected medical expenses. Motorcycle routes: Must-ride hidden gems

Motorcycle routes: Must-ride hidden gems

Foremost Insurance Blog | by Kaitlin Cassell | Motorcycle Routes | Shield Insurance

The best part about riding a motorcycle is being up close and personal with the scenery around you. It can be hard to find new places to take your bike and get the most out of every ride. If you are craving a new adventure, look no further! This list of routes highlights some lesser-known areas that are definitely worth a ride.

Cherohala Skyway

The Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina is a frequent #1 must-ride for bikers all across the U.S. With 318 curves in 11 miles, it is perfect for any thrill seeker. Bordered by the Great Smokey Mountains and Cherokee National Forest, it is breathtakingly beautiful and thrilling. The only downside is that its invigorating charm makes it one of the most crowded rides in the country.

Travel 25 minutes southeast and you will find Cherohala Skyway. This 43-mile-long ride is less busy and leads you through the mountains of North Carolina and the forests of Tennessee.

The lack of tourists and buildings makes Cherohala the perfect place to escape. There is no civilization for about 41 miles, except for a bathroom or two. If you are looking for a smooth ride with no distractions (other than nature’s overwhelming beauty), this is the ride for you.

Moonshiner 28 | Motorcycle Routes

Not too far from Cherohala, Moonshiner 28 offers an entirely different riding experience. The road features good food and plenty of places to stay during your trip. If you are looking for more action during your ride, Moonshiner 28 is for you.

This 103-mile ride extends from Deal’s Gap to Walhalla, South Carolina, cutting through Georgia along the way. You will encounter beautiful mountains, crashing waterfalls and several lakes on this spectacular route. You won’t want to miss it! Fun fact: Moonshiner 28 was once home to illegal moonshiners on the run from the law, hence the name. Stop at the (now legal) moonshine distilleries along the way to learn about the area’s rich history!
