The job market is still red hot<\/a> despite fears of a recession<\/a>, and job seekers continue to display confidence in their ability to take up better jobs<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI quite often get this question from my students \u2026 how do they choose from the many offers that they get?\u201d said Olivier Sibony, a professor of strategy at HEC Paris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as candidates find themselves in power, the \u201cmost likely mistake\u201d they would make is allowing their decision-making to be influenced by one interaction, he told CNBC Make It<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s also known the \u201chalo effect,\u201d which is the tendency for a positive overall impression of someone or a company to positively influence one\u2019s opinion in other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quite often, when people are mismatched to a job, it\u2019s because they didn\u2019t do their homework properly \u2026 they didn\u2019t ask the right questions.<\/p>

For example, if a job candidate\u2019s first interaction with a company representative \u2014 which is typically a recruiter \u2014 is a positive one, the questions he or she will ask during the interview \u201cwill support that initial judgment, Sibony said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo all the questions that you ask, you will find the answers satisfying and you will only ask questions that confirm your initial positive impression,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will not ask the tough questions \u2026 that would actually get the answers that would make you think, \u2018Maybe it\u2019s not such a good company after all.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can you avoid picking a job that you might regret<\/a>? CNBC Make It finds out.  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>1. Ask the same questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To overcome the halo effect, you should \u201cforce yourself to ask\u201d every company the same set of questions, said Sibony, who is also an associate fellow at the University of Oxford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether you actually ask those questions in the interview or get the information from another reliable source is a separate issue,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt might be much better to get the answers to your questions from Glassdoor or from people who work in the company \u2014 rather than ask the interviewer \u2014 who is very unlikely to give you a truthful answer, if you are realistic about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Do your job research <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s \u201cgood practice\u201d for everyone to have a checklist of questions or criteria they would like their job to fulfill, said Sibony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cQuite often, when people are mismatched to a job, it\u2019s because they didn\u2019t do their homework properly \u2026 they didn\u2019t ask the right questions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The author of \u201cYou\u2019re About to Make a Terrible Mistake!\u201d<\/a> recommended this process for creating a checklist: Talk to five friends who have left their jobs within months or \u201ctell you how much they hate their job every time you meet them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAsk yourself, what could that person have done before taking the job that would have given them the information they needed to make the correct decision? What is the red flag they should have seen but didn\u2019t look for?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
