Souped Up Golf Cart

In my home town a lot of people have golf carts. They even started the Redneck Golf Cart Club (RGCC). A lot of these golf carts have modified motors to drive fast and have horns, lights, and a built-in cooler for a beer or six.

These kind of machines are NOT covered on a standard homeowners policy. We can get you coverage, but it will be on a policy written specifically for these golf carts.

Here’s a checklist to see if you need a separate policy:

Is the top speed over 25 MPH?

Yes - you’ll need a golf cart policy

No - go to the next question

Where do you use the golf cart?

Home

Golf course

Private community which you live where golf carts are allowed in the bylaws (senior community, condo association or mobile home parks may allow these)

ANYWHERE ELSE - you’ll need a golf cart policy

Do you have a loan on the golf cart?

Yes - you’ll need a golf cart policy

No - go to the next question

Do you want insurance money if the cart is stolen, wrecked, or otherwise damaged?

Yes - you’ll need a golf cart policy

No - then it might be covered on your homeowners policy. Talk to your agent to confirm.

I guess the main thing to take from this is that if you have a golf cart, talk to your agent to make sure you are properly covered. Different insurance companies will have their own rules too. These policies are very cheap and not worth the risk of going without.
